Beyond the lecture theatre
Whether you're running your own virtual company, taking part in a leadership weekend or pitching your ideas to real companies, the Bachelor of Commerce goes beyond the four walls of a lecture room.
When you study the Bachelor of Commerce, you will soon realise that although understanding theory is incredibly important, it's vital to be able to apply that theory in the real world. Instead of waiting until you graduate, there are many hugely rewarding (and often fun!) course elements that will challenge you to apply your knowledge.
Take the Capstone challenge and run your own company
Curtin is the only university in WA to run the Business Capstone unit, where students take part in a competition to run the most successful “virtual” company. Business Capstone gives every final year business student the chance to put their skills into action. In teams, made up of students from all the different disciplines, you become the directors of a company. So, you might have a Marketing, Accounting, Economics and a Management student all bringing their expertise to the table.
Each week the teams need to make vital decisions about their company... will they concentrate on research and development or give their workforce a salary increase? They need to make the right decisions, because their company is competing against the other companies within their class.
The client is waiting...pitch your business to real companies
Rather than just learn about how to pitch to companies, public relations and advertising students do the real thing. As a part of the course, students form teams and present their strategies to actual companies. In the past, these companies have included the Surf Life Saving Association, the Cowtown Brewery and the Fremantle Dockers.
Solve real international problems with industry leaders.
Each year Chinese and Australian born students join together to present real solutions to real companies. In partnership with global accounting firm KPMG, BizQuest is framed around a business challenge offering real world experience. All participants leave the experience with incredible insight to take into their careers along with valuable industry contacts.
Field Trip anyone? How does Monkey Mia sound?
Tourism students apply their knowledge in some pretty fabulous places. Each year third year students visit the tourism hot spot of Monkey Mia and work with the experts in the field on tourism strategies and their implementation. Over six days they immerse themselves in all aspects of the tourism industry there, which of course isn't all hard work...
Sport Management students go on a 10 day study tour of major sporting organisation in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney and see behind the scenes.
Management students spend time during their Environmental issues unit learning directly from the experts in their workplaces. Instead of just reading case studies, students immerse themselves in them.
Try out a career placement
Many of our majors include placements where students spend time during their course working with a company with the support of a lecturer. It's not uncommon for these placements to kick start an actual job when the students graduate.
The real deal
You may also have units with real-world assessments - perhaps designing a marketing plan or building a website for a local business. You will be learning from real businesses - looks great on job applications too!
