Choose your major(s)
Within the Bachelor of Commerce degree you can choose to focus on one area of specialisation in-depth (a single major); or two separate areas, offering a broader perspective (a major combination). No matter what specialisation you choose, your degree will take the same amount of time to complete and you will graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce. But, there's no need to worry about having to choose a major or major combination up front - you don't need to decide until well into your first year (unless you choose an Arts major combination - see Course Structure below for more details). Course entry requirements/Prerequisites
English, English Literature or English as an Additional Language/Dialect is an essential TEE Subject for all Curtin course. There are no prerequisites for Commerce (although a pass in TEE Applicable Mathematics or TEE Discrete Mathematics is desirable).
Duration and availability
In total you will study 24 units to complete the Bachelor of Commerce degree - full time load is four units per semester, eight units a year. The degree takes three years to complete in full time mode. Part time study mode is available for the Bachelor of Commerce. Students can also study many units in an online or external mode. International students studying in Australia on a student visa can only study full time.
Course structure
In the first year of the course you will complete the initial ‘common core’ units. Completion of the core units will help you decide on your major or combined major. In most cases you will choose your major(s) in your second semester.
First year
In the first year you will complete the initial ‘common core’ compulsory units. These units provide an introduction to the different aspects of business.
In the first semester you take four of the compulsory units, and in second semester take the remaining three compulsory units and begin your specialisation, choosing either a single major or a double major.
The common core units are:
- Accounting 100: covers an introduction to business structures, profit analysis, accounting transactions and adjustments. Students learn about strategic plans and financial statements.
- Business Information Systems 100: an overview of business information systems and the use of technology in business.
- Business Law 100: an introduction to law with a business focus. Students examine the nature of law in Australia and international systems.
- Economics 100: covers key principles of economics, including trade, demand and supply theory, elasticity, government policies, monopoly and oligopoly.
- Management 100: introduces students to the development of management thought and practices, organisational behaviour and the future direction of management.
- Marketing 100: provides an overview of marketing concepts and how these are being applied in the real world. Topics include consumer behaviour, marketing research, promotion, distribution, product and service pricing.
- Communication in Business 100: introduces students to the principles of effective communication in the academic and professional business contexts.
Second year
In the second year you continue with your specialisation, immersing yourself in your chosen major or double major. See the full range of single and double majors.
Third year
In third year you will complete your specialisation units and the final common core unit, Business Capstone 301. In this popular unit you are placed in teams from across all the specialisations to take part in a simulation of running a business, putting to use the skills learnt in your degree.
