Topic: Housing Australians: The Challenges Ahead
Australia is at the crossroads.  As a nation we are ageing. As the ‘baby boomers’ leave the workforce in the next 10 years they will take much of our experience, skills base and taxation pool with them.  This could have profound economic and social consequences. The ongoing debates about population, infrastructure, taxation and economic growth are inextricably interwoven. What must we do to maintain our standard of living? How will we replace the skills that will soon be lost?  What type of housing will older Australians want and need? Where will they want to live? If we are to become a bigger Australia, where will we put our new arrivals? How will we design our cities and provide infrastructure to support them? This presentation provides focus to the debate by identifying the issues that must be addressed if Australia is to continue to enjoy the fruits of economic growth.
