About the program

The School of Marketing offers a one year program leading to award the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) to students who have completed undergraduate studies in marketing/public relations. It is only offered in Semester 1.

It provides students a structured introduction to research at an advanced level, developing both technical and analytical skills and reinforcing critical and independent thinking.

It also aims to bridge the rigour of academia with that of industry and market practice through internships, research projects and analysis of case studies. This not only prepares students who are beginning their marketing careers with the necessary knowledge and expertise, but also develops relevant skills in the applications of marketing research methods.

Why an Honours degree?

An honours degree is not for everyone. It differentiates you from the undergraduate degree. To an extent, it is more highly regarded than a postgraduate diploma/degree.  Employees value this thereby giving you a great competitive advantage.  Along with the specialised research skills you develop through the completion of your dissertation, an honours degree opens up a wider range of career possibilities that go beyond the typical entry-level jobs usually associated with the Pass degree of a three year undergraduate program.

You may be working on a research project that aligns with the interest of a potential employer. Your expertise in the subject matter will provide you with the advantage over other candidates. You will have a special expertise that employers will look out for. Having gone through a stringent and rigorous regime independently, the honours dissertation is an excellent testimony to your strengths and skills.

  • Almost all scholarships to a masters degree require an honours degree. This further ascertains the prestige of having one.
  • Upon completion of the honours program, you only need an additional two semesters (instead of four) to complete a masters program.
  • With a first class honours, you may be considered for a direct entry into the PhD program.

What is the role of Honours Program Manager?

The Honours Program Manager is the:

  • administrator of the program; and
  • support person for supervisors and dissertation examiners.
