Research Interests

My Ph.D. thesis and early papers concern the impact of non-price competition (advertising and R&D) on profitability as well as the role of tariffs in restricting the internationalisation of competition. Subsequent papers emphasise the interrelationship between market structure and competition, particularly their joint determination by conditions of tariffs, technology and the behaviour of firms. My recent papers have been primarily concerned with the pricing process in manufacturing, including price leadership and mark-up pricing. This analysis has been applied to empirical research on (1) the impact of international competition on domestic pricing, (2) the international transmission of inflation and (3) the terms of trade between manufacturers and primary producers. Since 1992 this research has been supported by five multi-year grants from the Australian Research Council, with the most recent grant providing $364,000 over the years 2006 through 2009 to support research on innovation, competition and economic performance. I have also conducted applied research with co-authors in media and telecommunications economics, estimating the effect of competition on the price of television advertising time in the US and estimating the demand for pay cable television in the US, as well as the demand for telephone services in Australia, and the cost of supplying these services. The work on the demand for telephone services in Australia originated from a consultancy with Telecom, while much of the work on pay cable television was in connection with consultancies for American Television and Communications Corporation. Other consultancies have been for the Denver Nuggets (a US National Basketball Association team) on the optimal pricing of tickets, the Prices Surveillance Authority on the implications of non-price competition for economic welfare, the Business Council of Australia on targeted industry assistance policy, and the Office of Rail Access Regulation of Western Australia on access pricing. My most recent research relates technical change to the analysis of dynamic competition and productivity growth, with implications for the theory of economic growth.
